Kaer Morhen is not available all the time. You will be able to get there only when you reach the second act. From the moment you unlock access to Kaer Morhen, you can travel between this location and other main lands - this is done by using the signposts, i.e. the fast travel system.

A large chunk of the main plot takes place in Kaer Morhen and there are few side quests available as well. After completing the game, you won't be able to contact anyone who lived in this castle - it will remain abandoned.
