Starting and completing the Flying Class quest
In Hogwarts Legacy you can fly around the world on a broomstick, but it is not available from the beginning of the campaign. The main character must initially travel on his or her own or using fast travel (after finding Floo Flames). The broom slot is visible in the inventory window, but is still locked.
You need to unlock the Flying Class main quest, which is about learning how to use a broomstick. It becomes available after returning from Jackdaw's tomb and discovering the map chamber as part of the main storyline. This takes place a few hours after the begining of the campaign.
The quest requires you to unlock at least level 6. If you have a lower level, then complete some side quests or, for example, search for pages of the Field Guide to accumulate XP.
As part of the lesson, you will learn the basics of flying on a broom - the game will gradually explain e.g. how to change the flight altitude, how to control the speed of movement and how to temporarily accelerate. You can also complete a longer flight around the castle in this quest.
In the game options, you will find a separate control tab for the broom. You can remind yourself of the control keys after the game stops displaying them.
Purchasing and upgrading your own broom
Completing the Flying Class quest doesn't mean you'll get your own broomstick. You have to purchase it on your own.
Select the Hogsmeade map - there's a Spinwitches Sporting Goods Store on it. Travel to Hogsmeade with fast travel and visit the shop.
It's owned by Albie Weekes. You can buy a broomstick there - each one costs 600 gold.
Albie Weekes can give you a side quest called Flight Test right away - this is the beginning of upgrading the broom. This is done by taking part in timed races using a broomstick - you have to fly through successive rings and make it before the time runs out. The protagonist must then report progress to Weekes.
Activating the broom and landing
Flying on a broom is not possible in Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, and in some other unique locations. In the lower left corner of the screen, next to the mini-map, you will see a crossed-out flying bird icon. You must go out into the open or leave the town.
The broom is selected from the pop-up menu, which contains available tools. Hold down the menu button (L1/LB on the pad) and then the broom button (Circle/B on the pad).
If you want to stop flying on a broom, approach the ground and press the landing button (Circle/B on the gamepad).
There is no limit to the length of the flight in the game, and thanks to flying you can also explore the game world much easier and unlock Floo Flames (fast travel points) in remote locations.
