The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Can you transfer saves to the next-gen version? The Witcher 3 Guide

Can saves from old-gens be transferred to the next-gen version (PS5, Xbox Series)? This page of The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt guide answers that question and explains how save transfer works.

Last update: Thursday, December 15, 2022

On this page of the guide to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you will find out whether you can transfer saves - between different platforms (different console models and PC) and between the original release of the game and the next gen version. We also answer whether you can automatically unlock previously obtained trophies for the next-gen version.

Transferring saves between platforms

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt received a major update that made it possible to transfer saves between different platforms. You can do that by uploading saves to the cloud. To continue, you need to:

  1. Upload The Witcher 3 save for platform 1 (from within the game).
  2. Run The Witcher 3 on platform 2 and download the save from the cloud.

The advantage of this method is that you can, for example, start a game on PlayStation and continue it on PC. You have full freedom in uploading saves.

Transferring saves between the original and next-gen versions

On December 14, 2022, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt was released in an next-gen edition for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

If you have the original game or the Game of the Year edition, you don't have to restart the game - you can simply transfer your saves. You will be able to continue your playthrough on the next-gen console. The next-gen edition is fully compatible with older saves.

How to solve the problem with transferring saves to the next-gen edition - no compatibility

When you try to transfer saves from an old version (original or The Witcher 3 Game of the Year Edition), you may encounter compatibility issues and problems with connecting to the server.

The solution to this problem is simple - you must have both editions of the game updated to at least 4.0, i.e.:

  1. The original Witcher 3 or The Witcher 3 Edition Game must be version 4.0. You can select the game in your library and check for updates - patch 4.0 should start downloading. Wait while the game updates.
  2. The Witcher 3 Next-gen edition must be version 4.0 (the one you transfer your saves to).

After both editions are 4.0, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the original version of the game in version 4.0 (the one you want to transfer the progress from).
  2. Load the latest save game and create a new save - it will be compatible with version 4.0. Send this save to the cloud.
  3. Exit the original version of the game and run the next-gen version.
  4. Download the save from the cloud (the one created a moment ago and compatible with version 4.0).
  5. You should now be able to load a save and continue the campaign on next-gen.

Can trophies and achievements be transferred?

Unfortunately, transferring saves does not work for trophies and achievements. By loading a save from PS4, you won't automatically get the same trophies on PS5.

You have to get the trophies again. It's best to start a new game so you don't miss, e.g. achievements related to progress in the story mode or performing specific activities.
