Unexpectedly, Hogwarts Legacy introduces a few stealth mechanics, among them, sneaking and surprise attacks. On this page of the guide, we show how to use Chameleon Spell, how to sneak in locations with enemies, how to surprise attack enemies and how to use Petrificus Totalus spell as well as how to avoid raising an alarm.
Sneaking in locations with enemies
Stealth and stealth attacks are initially unavailable. To unlock these mechanics, you need to progress in the main storyline i.e. reach Secrets of the Restricted Section main quest during which you unlock the Chameleon Spell.
In order to use the spell, you need to choose it from the spell select window. Then, you can activate it with the right combination of buttons (R2/RT + button to which you've assigned the spell).
Sneak attacks
In order for stealth to be activated, you need to cast the Chameleon spell before entering a location with enemies - fortunately, you don't have to worry about it turning off suddenly and it is activated for a long time.
Look for opportunities to sneak up on enemies from behind (it's easiest with those standing still). Once approached from behind, press the interaction button to cast Petrificus Totalus spell.
This can lead to following outcomes:
- immediate elimination of a regular opponent;
- serious weakening of a strong opponent - you can use Petrificus Totalus to deal extra damage to a strong opponent before engaging in standard combat.
When using the Chameleon spell, you need to be aware that you only assumed camouflage, and don't have full invisibility. Enemies may start to notice you if you are in front of them - in that case, move out of their line of sight or hide behind an obstacle. This will make sure that you stay hidden and don't raise an alarm.
Upgrading Petrificus Totalus
After you reach level 22, be sure to unlock the Petrificus Totalus Mastery talent from the Stealth category. Buying this ability allows you to silently eliminate enemies standing close to each other. After performing a stealth attack on one of them, the rest will be automatically incapacitated. This is especially helpful when, for example, you want to easily eliminate a pair of enemies.
